"You're always trying to make your partner better. "The biggest thing you take away from improv is listening to and serving your partner in a scene," she said. And it's a story I hadn't seen before."įey's years at Second City turned out to be reliable performance training. Her role in director Shawn Levy's picture, Fey told me Sunday, is "sweet and sad, and it felt like a different part than I often get to play. Tina Fey came to town over the weekend with the new ensemble comedy "This is Where I Leave You." She plays one of several grown siblings reuniting at their late father's home for a tense, eventful week of sitting Shiva. Bill Murray enjoyed his Bill Murray Day here, and premiered his latest film, "St. And you know…" He pauses, smiles into the middle distance, and then gently delivers the zinger: "It's still the nicest place on a pretty sketchy block."Ĭarell's not the only Second City alum in Toronto this week. The last place we lived was up near Wilson and Magnolia. When we went back in '09, I didn't recognize a lot! A lot has changed. "If my wife hadn't gotten 'Saturday Night Live'…I mean, we were looking for homes in Chicago. But "we almost stayed in Chicago," he said. I can't really put it any other way."Ĭarell's film and television careers now feel as inevitable as that "Foxcatcher" Oscar nomination on the horizon. It's an all-for-one philosophy, and I can't help but feel a sense of love toward it. It's predicated on helping one another, making sure the other person is the best person in the scene. To watch the people who came before us, the people who are there are now, doing their work…not to wax too poetical about it, but it's such a meaningful place. Everybody that night realized how integral Second City has been, for all of us, and how closely tied we are to one another because of that place.

But it was so much more than just going back. "Nancy and I thought it'd be fun to see some old friends, see Chicago again. "I think it crept up on everybody I certainly wasn't expecting the emotional response I had to it," Carell told me Saturday night at Crème Brasserie in Toronto's Yorkville neighborhood.

Carell, his fellow "Daily Show" alum Stephen Colbert and many others returned to the Old Town landmark in December 2009 for an alumni reunion show people still talk about. Carell met his girlfriend Nancy Walls while teaching a Second City improvisation class. At a dinner party thrown by Sony Pictures Classics Saturday night, Carell - a seriously nice fellow - reminisced about his years in the '90s in Chicago, when he was a mainstage god (fellow Chicago alum Tina Fey's description) of The Second City.
